MODEL WITH A PURPOSE: MR. AND MS. SMMC 2018 FOCUSES ON ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND CONSERVATION

by Liza B. Yohan

The search for Mr. and Ms. SMMC 2018 capped the 14th Founding Anniversary Celebration of San Mateo Municipal College on December 6, 2018 at the JFD Stadium. This year’s search was organized by Professors Filipino M. Salamat and Victor P. Rebosada, together with the Supreme Student Council.

As a response to the calls on protecting the environment for the future generation, the search had the theme: “Angels and Warriors of the Environment Students On-call for Mother Earth,” which, according to the organizers, aimed to instill and develop in the candidates and the students the love and the value of protecting and conserving the environment for a greener future.

Part of the challenges of the candidates was promoting their advocacies on environmental protection through various outreach programs and activities. They were also required to make their own creative costumes out of recycled materials as a response to the calls for saving the environment.

The inclusion of advocacies on environmental protection and conservation was something new for the pageant. The organizers saw to it that the event became more meaningful by reiterating the importance of doing individual’s part for the environment. Aside from including environmental advocacies, this year’s search was different as candidates were allowed, for the first time, to compete in swim wear.

The competition became more intense after the announcement of the Top 4 candidates and during the Question and Answer portion which was, again, another first in the school’s pageant.

The organizers went away with the usual question and answer in which a prepared question is given and answered by a candidate. This year, the finalists were tasked to interpret a picture on environmental issues and problems randomly flashed on the big screen and were encouraged to include their calls for

environmental protection and conservation. They were also required to give a response using the English language only.
The night was full of beauty and glamour and ended with a lot of surprises and excitement.
